Creative Teaching from My CopyCat Magazine Collection

Teaching Children Character

“V is for Virtue,” May/June 1996, pp. 14-21

I guess I kept the coolest units for my CopyCat collection and this is one of the cutest!  This was when Children’s Book of Virtues came out.  This unit would be great for a church group to do since it’s about moral education.  These are covered:  (I used to have tapes for these from Chick fil-a) perseverance, courage, compassion, responsibility, work ethic, friendship, and honesty.  Encourages reading Aesops fables so if that is what you’re studying with your class, this is a good time for this unit.  Has cute reproducible reminders.  This would be great for Family Night activities.  Please use this only for personal use.

It’s a Beach Party!

“Celebrate the end of school and the beginning of summer vacation with a beach party!”  Beach bingo, beach books, beach behavior booster (candy!), teach about shells (you’ll love this shells coloring page from author Jan Brett), shell game (reproducible cards), beach games, sand castle craft and sand jars, beach snack and music.  Also an individual reading record and surfboard bookmark.  I’m thinking Vacation Bible School!

Hans Christian Anderson

“Hans Christian Anderson, The Fairy Tale Prince,” Mar/Apr 1996, pp. 28-34

I loved all the CopyCat units on children’s authors and this was one of the most creative ones!  Learn all about Hans and do activities like paper cutting (sherenschnitte) which he was also known for; make a paper bag theater; have princess and pea tea sandwiches (my absolute favorite fairy tale!); and make scrapbooks which is also something Hans was known for.  Our family had so much fun with this!  Don’t forget to watch Disney’s Little Mermaid.

Since this is about fairy tales, I also included:  “Fairy Tale Puppet Patterns (James Marshall Style),” Nov/Dec 1993, p. 38  All I saved was the puppets that came with this unit.  I love Marshall’s illustrations so these were fun to use when teaching fairy tales.
